Three Lions Coach Explains The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
In the past, Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer began with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his calling.
Metoric Climb
Barry's progression is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he built a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams included top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Dedication, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, they both test boundaries. Their methods feature mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and dislikes phrases like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”
Ambitious Trainers
The assistant coach says along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that’s what we spend long hours toward. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of the trends and to lead and create our own ones. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We must implement a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.
“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data these days. They can organize – structured defenses. We are focusing to increase tempo in that central area.”
Thirst for Improvement
Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into tough situations he could find to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.
Barry graduated as the best in his year, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included won over and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the team dismissed nearly all assistants except Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he brought Barry over away from London to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
