The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
