For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel is detailed in the theatrical production the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
