The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates Domestic Box Office in Debut Weekend
Did Sony achieved another hit? Following the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed in excess of $600 million at the box office, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million milestone globally, reaching a worldwide gross of $108M during its debut. This movie outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second weekend in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Strong American and Global Earnings
Helmed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a straightforward follow-up of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It grossed $18.2M domestically after a robust $5.2M Saturday box office and $4.5 million Sunday. Internationally, the animated by MAPPA movie grossed $14.7 million across 46 global regions, pushing its worldwide total to over $60 million under Sony ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its official box office total.
Comparisons to Past Blockbuster Anime Movies
Specialist agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, contrasting the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the North America in the year 2022 and started with a similar $18M in the U.S.. The new film's opening frame aligns with that benchmark, while its $108M global gross currently tracks just behind that movie's $166.6 million final run. Even if it doesn't seem possible Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will achieve the box office of blockbuster the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a major victory for Sony.
Marketing Efforts Fuel Box Office Dominance
Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to boost their leadership at the anime box office. This film's promotional efforts began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in summer with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a notable appearance at NYCC including exclusive clips, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and popular figures too after the last day of the event.
