A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy demand.

These impacts, some of which are connected to climate tipping points, are seen as improbable but possible. The researchers stated that these models filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The severe weather events we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," stated the professor who led the study. "The nation has been planning lacking the methods to assess extreme possibilities. We've now provided policymakers what they need to plan for future conditions they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."
