Larian Studios Explains Its Implementation of AI Tools for New Project
The team behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently unveiled its new project, creating significant anticipation within the gaming community. However, subsequent statements from the studio's lead designer have added clarity to the narrative, focusing on the developer's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a latest clarification, the studio's founder outlined that the developer is utilizing machine learning for specific supporting functions. These encompass developing pitch decks, generating rough artistic references, and writing temporary copy.
Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the final material in the game will be authored entirely by human artists. "Larian is creating all the content ourselves," he stated.
Our studio is constantly increasing our team of concept artists and are currently putting together writing teams.
As concept art is being specifically referenced — we presently have twenty-three artistic staff and have positions available for more creatives.
Each initiative we do is additive and designed to enabling creatives to spend more time on making content.
Every machine learning application implemented properly is supplementary to a artist's routine, not a replacement for their craft.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of AI usage initially provoked backlash among a segment of the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke issued more elaboration on public forums.
"At Larian, we employ AI tools to explore references, similar to we use Google and physical media," he wrote. "In the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then substitute with authentic concept art."
He added, "Our studio recruits artists for their creative vision, not for their capacity to execute what a machine suggests."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had previously outlined the studio's practical approach to machine learning, defining its use into primary functions:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to quickly build rough versions of mechanics to validate concepts ahead of full production.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how AI could in the future create innovative gameplay, particularly in creating player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.
He clearly stated that key artistic domains — including writing — are are absolutely not areas where the team is cutting artistic talent. In fact, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact fields.
"Larian is not releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not looking at cutting staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
