Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
