The pre-Ashes verbal sparring is escalating further, with former England bowler Broad stating that the English side will face "arguably the weakest Australian team in over a decade" on tour this season.

David Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Skepticism

Broad's assertion came as a reply to Warner – an Ashes foe of Broad’s – forecasting a 4-0 victory for the home side. "Should the skipper [Pat Cummins] be absent, they could perhaps snatch a single victory," Warner commented.

The Aussies remain undefeated in a Ashes match at home after England's 3-1 victory in 2010-11. Their 5-0 win three years later – on the back of seven losses in their previous nine Tests – was followed by 4-0 Ashes triumphs in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 campaigns.

Squad Doubt and Fitness Concerns for the Hosts

However, the No 1-ranked Test side, who have lost only one of their last thirteen series, enter the upcoming assignment with uncertainty over the composition of their top order and the health of Cummins, who is doubtful to play in the opening match at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It's extremely challenging to win in Australia as an English team, or any visiting team," said Broad on his podcast. "The Australians are massive favourites."

"The Aussies face the greatest expectations because they’re expected to win, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got question marks over their squad and concerns over their skipper's condition. It's not unreasonable in thinking – it’s actually not an opinion, it's a reality – it’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010. And it’s the best English team since 2010. So those things match up to the reality that it’s going to be a brilliant contest."

Comparison to Historic Tour

"Australia have been highly stable for a long period of time that it was clear who was going to open the innings, who would bat, what bowlers there were, and they don’t have that. It closely resembles a similar situation to 2010-11 when England went and won there. The reality is the Aussies typically need to underperform to be defeated at home and England must excel. The English have a solid opportunity of being very good and the Australians face a real possibility of being bad."

Team Decision for the Visitors

A major issue for the English camp remains their selection at the number three position, with Ollie Pope and Bethell vying for the role. Alastair Cook, whose 766 runs set up the tourists’ series win 15 years ago, thinks it would be "strange" for Ben Stokes’ side to move away from Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the past three seasons.

"I would bat Pope at number three," said Cook. "I think it’s quite an easy decision. They have a player who has been involved in this preparation for several years. He’s captained the side, he has delivered remarkable performances for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He understands how to make big scores in first-class cricket. If you get rid of him now, I think that changes the whole dynamic of the foundation they've established over the last few years."

While hailing Bethell as "a hugely gifted cricketer", Cook said: "It would be a major risk [to pick him] because should it fail where do you move back to, a player you recently discarded? They’ve invested so much in players such as Pope and [Crawley that it would seem such a strange thing to change it now."

Captaincy Change and Commentary Team

Ollie Pope has been succeeded by Harry Brook as the team's deputy skipper but, according to Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey right-hander.

"The management has acted decisively on that, considering if there is an injury to Ben Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and it's evident that he seems to be a natural fit. This will relieve Pope. I believe it won't undermine him. Certainly it will have disappointed him because anytime you get taken off a leadership thing it isn't perfect, but I doubt it diminishes his standing."

Alastair Cook will be in Australia as part of the broadcast team of the Ashes, and will be accompanied by fellow Ashes winners Finn and Swann as in-studio analysts. The network will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with play-by-play announcers Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the United Kingdom, while Cook, Finn and Swann deliver expert analysis from Australia. Rainford-Brent is also part of the broadcast team operating remotely, with the live presentation to be presented by Ives.
