An Tale of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

During the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to book lodging when I arrived, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Coming from Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering in the direction of the casino, thinking I could pass the evening somewhere operating through the night. This was not ideal at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more folks with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared lost as a woman noticed me loitering in the city and asked whether I needed help. I shared my situation and without hesitation she suggested I could crash on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one of the filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took as a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – but still very grateful.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
